How to Build a Shed Ramp (Step-by-Step)

A shed ramp is one of those small additions that makes a shed dramatically more usable. Without one, wrestling a mower or a loaded wheelbarrow over the threshold is a daily annoyance — and a good way to strain your back. With a solid ramp, everything just rolls in and out. Here's how to build one that's sturdy, safe, and sized right.

First, measure the rise and plan the slope

The single most important decision is the slope, and the mistake most people make is building the ramp too steep.

Start by measuring the rise — the vertical distance from the ground to the shed's threshold. Then decide how much horizontal run you'll give the ramp. The more run you allow for that rise, the gentler and easier the ramp. A gentle ramp takes more space but is far safer and easier to push heavy, wheeled equipment up; a steep one saves space but fights you every time.

If you'll be moving a riding mower, low-clearance equipment, or anything heavy, be generous with the run. It's better to have a ramp that feels almost too long than one that's a struggle (or that scrapes the underside of your mower).

Choose your ramp type

  • Wooden ramp — a framed structure with sloped stringers and a solid deck surface. Precise, quick to build, and ideal when there's a defined step up to the door.
  • Gravel ramp — a compacted, tapered bed of gravel that rises gradually to the threshold. Durable, drains well, and low-maintenance, but it's more digging and grading.

Gather materials

Because the ramp sits on or near the ground, moisture is the enemy — so material choice matters:

  • Pressure-treated lumber for the stringers (the sloped supports) and framing.
  • A solid deck surface — pressure-treated plywood or deck boards.
  • Exterior/structural screws or fasteners rated for treated lumber.
  • A non-slip surface — grip strips, grip paint, or a textured finish.

Build it step by step

  1. Cut the stringers. These are the angled supports that create the slope. Cut them so one end meets the ground and the other sits flush against the shed's threshold. The angle you cut is set by the rise and run you chose earlier.
  2. Set the stringers in place. Space them evenly across the ramp's width — more stringers for a wider ramp or heavier loads, so the deck doesn't flex underfoot.
  3. Secure the top to the shed. Fasten the ramp's top edge to the shed's threshold or floor framing so it can't shift or pull away. A ramp that moves is a ramp that fails.
  4. Anchor the bottom. Where the ramp meets the ground, make sure it sits solidly and won't slide. On soft ground, a gravel pad or a buried cleat helps.
  5. Add the deck surface. Fasten your plywood or deck boards across the stringers, keeping the surface flush with the threshold so there's no lip to catch a wheel.
  6. Make it non-slip. Finish with grip strips or a textured coating. This step is not optional — a smooth wooden ramp is treacherous in rain or frost.

Get the details right

A few things separate a ramp that lasts from one that rots or wobbles:

  • No lip at the top. The ramp surface should meet the threshold cleanly so wheels roll over the join, not into it.
  • Width to spare. Make the ramp at least as wide as your door, and ideally a few inches wider than your widest equipment.
  • Drainage. Don't trap water against the shed or under the ramp. Slope it to shed water and keep the base well-drained.
  • Solid footing. A ramp on soft, uneven ground will sink and twist over time. Firm up the base first.
