Metal Shed Kits: Pros, Cons & How They Compare to Wood

Metal shed kits are having a surge in interest, and the pitch is genuinely appealing: cheaper than wood, no rot, no painting, and a weekend to put up. For a lot of people that's exactly right. For others it's a purchase they regret within a season.

Since we don't sell sheds, kits, or materials, here's the honest breakdown — what metal genuinely does well, where it falls down, and how to decide between metal and wood.

What you're actually buying

A metal shed kit is a set of pre-formed galvanised steel (occasionally aluminium) panels, a frame, fasteners, and instructions. You assemble it on a base you provide. Quality varies enormously across the category — from flimsy budget units to genuinely solid buildings — so "metal shed" tells you much less about quality than the specific product does.

Where metal genuinely wins

Price. Metal is usually the cheapest way to get a given footprint enclosed. If budget is the binding constraint, this is the honest advantage.

No rot, no termites. Steel doesn't care about damp or insects the way timber does. For a damp climate or a termite region, that's a real, ongoing benefit.

Almost no maintenance. No painting, staining, or sealing on the usual cycle. Wash it occasionally and that's about it.

Fast, tool-light assembly. Pre-formed panels and pre-drilled holes mean many kits go up in a weekend without cutting anything.

Fire resistance. Steel won't burn, which some people value for storing fuel, mowers, or workshop chemicals (ventilation still matters).

Where metal falls down

Condensation. This is the number one complaint, and it's physics, not a defect. Thin metal cools quickly overnight; humid air inside hits the cold surface and condenses, then drips onto whatever's below. Ventilation, a dry base, and not storing damp items inside all help — but a metal shed on damp ground with blocked vents will get wet inside.

Rust at the weak points. Coatings resist rust well until they're breached — assembly scratches, drilled holes, dents, and the base panel sitting against wet ground. Damage during assembly is a very common origin point.

Denting and wind. Panels dent (hail, ladders, a reversing car) and dents are effectively permanent. Light metal sheds are also highly wind-sensitive — they must be properly anchored to a solid base, or they can genuinely lift. Anchoring is not optional.

Hard to modify. This is the one people underestimate. You can't just screw a shelf bracket, hook, or French cleat into a thin steel wall the way you can into a stud. Adding a window, running a shelf along a wall, or hanging heavy tools ranges from awkward to impossible. If you picture a workshop wall covered in tools, metal will frustrate you.

Poor insulation, noisy. Metal conducts heat readily — hot inside in summer, cold in winter — and rain on a metal roof is loud. Retrofitting insulation on most kits is fiddly and rarely done well.

The base isn't included. Nearly every metal kit needs a solid, level, anchored base you build or pour yourself. Budget for it; it's frequently the hidden cost.

The simple rule: if you'll mostly open the door, put something in, and close it, metal is a sound, economical choice. If you'll spend time in there, hang things on the walls, insulate it, or change it later, wood is worth the extra money.

If you buy metal, do these five things

  1. Build a proper base. Level, well-drained, and solid — a concrete pad or a compacted gravel pad with a frame. This one decision drives condensation, rust, and stability.
  2. Anchor it properly. Use the kit's anchor points and hardware suited to your base. Non-negotiable in wind.
  3. Maximise ventilation. Keep vents clear; add more if the design allows.
  4. Assemble carefully. Edges are sharp (wear gloves), and every scratch is a future rust spot. Touch up coating damage.
  5. Plan storage that doesn't rely on the walls. Freestanding shelving and floor racks, since wall fixings are limited.

Compare it against building in wood

Before assuming metal is the cheaper option, it's worth pricing the alternative properly — raw materials for a wood build are often closer than people expect, and you get a structure you can shelve, insulate, and modify.

Whatever you choose, remember the rules apply either way: permits, setbacks, and foundations depend on size and placement, not on what the shed is made of.

Are metal sheds any good?
For low-maintenance, weatherproof storage at a lower price, yes — metal sheds don't rot, don't attract termites, and never need painting. Their weak points are condensation, denting, being hard to modify or hang shelving on, and needing solid anchoring in wind. They're a good buy for straightforward storage and a poor one for workshops or anything you want to insulate and customise.
Do metal sheds rust?
Modern kits are galvanised and coated, so they resist rust well — but they're not immune. Rust starts where the coating is broken (scratches from assembly, drilled holes, dents) and where moisture sits, especially at the base if the shed stands on damp ground. A dry, well-drained foundation and careful assembly do more for longevity than the spec sheet.
How do you stop condensation in a metal shed?
Ventilation and a dry base are the fix. Metal cools fast overnight, so humid air condenses on the inside walls and roof and drips onto your contents. Ensure the kit's vents are unobstructed (add more if you can), keep the shed off damp ground on a well-drained pad, avoid storing wet items inside, and consider a moisture barrier under the floor. Insulation helps but is awkward to retrofit on most kits.
Is a metal or wooden shed better?
It depends on the job. Metal wins on price, maintenance, and rot resistance — ideal for pure storage. Wood wins on strength, insulation, customisation, and the ability to hang shelving, add windows, or turn the space into a workshop or office. Buy metal for cheap, low-fuss storage; buy or build wood if you'll spend time in there or want to modify it.
